Encouraging learning today involves taking advantage of resources already available within the educational setting, while minimizing the ecological footprint. Resources for outdoor play do not have to be expensive or elaborate. Loose materials offer rich opportunities for play and can be more interesting to children than store-bought toys. Using these materials fosters creativity, contributes to environmental awareness, and facilitates collaboration with parents, families, and communities.
This workshop will explore:
• criteria for selecting materials: sustainability, inclusion/accessibility, multi-grade use, versatility, variety, quality, quantity, durability, aesthetic value, safety, and functionality;
• the potential of open-ended materials to enrich the educational context, from the perspective of the various areas and domains outlined in the Curriculum Guidelines for Preschool Education;
• the role of families and the community in building a resource center for loose materials.
