Throughout the training program, participants will cover the following topics:

  • Concepts, Principles, and History of Outdoor Education: Understanding outdoor education as a pedagogical approach rooted in educational traditions dating back to the 16th century and evolving into the 21st century. An analysis of the contributions of educators such as Comenius, Pestalozzi, Friedrich Fröbel, Maria Montessori, and Margaret McMillan, among others, relating their ideas to the historical and social contexts in which they emerged.
  • European and International Models of Reference: From forest kindergartens (Waldkindergarten) to the Nature Study movement and contemporary practices in outdoor education.
  • Benefits and Curriculum Integration: Cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical impacts of outdoor education. Alignment with the national curriculum, specifically “Knowledge of the World” in preschool and “Environmental Studies” in the 1st cycle, ensuring a connection to the Essential Learning Outcomes.
  • Active Pedagogies and Methodologies in Science Education: Application of project-based methodologies, Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE), and other inquiry-based strategies that promote practical, critical, and creative learning in outdoor settings.

Educational Continuity: Building bridges between preschool and elementary school to ensure a smooth and coherent educational transition.

Vera Malhão,

 

A marine biologist and educator, she is the founder of the Lutra – Outdoor Education project, where she fosters a deliberate connection between children and the natural world. With specialized training in science education and ten years of teaching experience at the Maria Ulrich High School, she advocates for an active pedagogy in which nature serves as the central resource for holistic development. Her vision focuses on transforming the outdoors into a living classroom, where direct exploration of elements such as water or soil forms the foundation for learning scientific, mathematical, and artistic concepts.

She currently coordinates the Graduate Program in Outdoor Education at ISEC Lisbon, training professionals to integrate the school curriculum into nature-based contexts in a safe and structured manner. Through Lutra and by supporting educational teams, she assists schools in transitioning to outdoor teaching practices, creating routines that strengthen children’s autonomy and their sense of belonging to the community. Her work combines research with hands-on practice, providing concrete tools to ensure that outdoor education becomes a consistent reality within the educational system.
