Risky play, while an important stimulus for a child’s development, is often overlooked, as there is an excessive focus on ensuring the safety of young children.

Assuming that all children have a natural drive for action and that the body plays a central role in the learning process, opportunities for movement outdoors can be facilitated and valued. These opportunities for movement are related to the experience of risk and challenge during play. In this context, children gradually gain confidence and step outside their “comfort zone.” In this process, risk emerges as the need to make choices among different courses of action, without knowing the outcome.

Recognizing that we cannot do without the positive effects of risky play, as educators we must know how to support it so that children can experience risk within a safe environment.
